A total of 465 parturient women were screened for group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonization by using 4 culture systems, direct plating of vaginal and rectal swab samples and enrichment of the samples in Todd-Hewitt broth. Group B Streptococcus was isolated in 8.2%. Direct plating and enrichment culture of vaginal samples (DVS) yielded 5.6% and 1.9% isolates of GBS, respectively. Direct rectal swab (DRS) was positive in 3.2% of the women and enrichment culture of rectal swab (ERS) was positive in 0.9%. Combination of direct plating and enrichment of vaginal swab detected 5.8% isolates of GBS, whereas combination of direct plating and enrichment of rectal swab was positive in 4.1% samples, and combination of DVS + DRS yielded 7.1% isolates of GBS. A total of 427 samples were negative for GBS. Test results of the four culture systems demonstrated that direct plating of vaginal swab was the most sensitive. However, for maximum isolation of GBS, use of selective broth media in addition to direct plating is important.
The objectives of this study was to assess noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) in steel factory workers and determine the prevalence of NIHL, noise intensity, NIHL relation to age, work hour and
occupation. A cross sectional design was used and data collection was done through interviews, measurement, and examination. The study found that the noise intensity was 88.3-112.8 dBA in work unit of the factory. The audiometry examination showed prevalence of NIHL was 43.6 % (n=264). The increase of age, task as maintenance worker, and work-hours were related to increased NIHL (p< 0.05). There was no significant association noise intensity and increased NIHL (p>0.05).Polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age that is associated with hormonal disturbance and influencing general health. Clinical and biochemical features or other examination have varied results. The reason that cause a patients to see the physician were menstrual cycle disturbance, infertility, obese, hirsute, and other complication such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes. The polycystic ovary syndrome is not only caused of gynaecological problems, but is also related to other metabolic disturbance, such as insulin resistance with for long – term health implications. Women with this syndrome have an increased risk of diabetes mellitus, coronary disease and endometrial carcinoma. Insulin sensitizing agent can help the patients to improve hormonal disturbance as basis of problems in this syndrome.
Endothelins are potent vasoconstrictor peptides released by endothelial cells. Endothelin is a polypeptide consisting of 21 amino acids. There are three closely related isoforms endothelin-1, endothelin-2, and endothelin-3, which differ in a few of the amino acid constituents. The effects of endothelin are mediated by two receptors, ET
A and ETB, which are distribution in various tissue. Research evidence suggests that endothelin is a potent vasoconstrictor that could play a role in cardiovascular function and the pathogenesis of various cardiovascular disorders. Many clinical studies have demonstrated increased production of endothelin in patients with hypertension, atherosclerosis, myocardial ischemia, and congestive heart failure.Vibrio cholerae V. cholerae cells can survive changes in temperature, salinity, or availability of organic matter. Viable but nonculturable V. cholerae O1 contribute to the occurence of seasonal epidemics because the organism can persist for a long time in the aquatic environment. The implications of dormancy of V. cholerae serogroup O1 are both significant and relevant, considering that dormant, viable but nonculturable, forms are not recoverable on conventional bacteriologic system. In addition, V. cholerae O1 are associated with chitinaceous zooplankton and shelfish. This association has proven to be a key factor in the global nature of cholera epidemics.O1 is capable of entering a dormant state, that is, viable but nonculturable. Representing a spore-like stage, without formation of a true spore coat, dormant
Asbest is a fibrous mineral which is being used in many places. Asbest exposure can cause asbestosis. Asbestosis is a work men’s disease. Asbest fibers are inhaled and enter the lung parenchym; and if it remains there, it will become permanent and is difuse interstisial, and alveolar fibrosis. Asbest in the body can cause lung cancer and pleura or peritoneal mesothelioma. There is still little information on mesothelioma. Mesothelioma risk is related with asbest dose exposure. There is no correlation between mesothelioma and smoke. Prognosis of mesothelioma is poor with survival rate 1-4 years after diagnosis. There is only little effect or no response to chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. Nowadays, immunotherapy or gen therapy are used. This prophylaxis against asbest exposure is the best preventive especially in asbest industries.
